LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE

DETOX & Lymphadema RELIEF

Understanding Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Your Body's Gentle Cleanse

Feeling sluggish, puffy, or dealing with persistent swelling? Your lymphatic system plays a vital role in keeping you healthy by removing waste products and maintaining fluid balance. Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM) is a specialized, gentle manual therapy designed to support and enhance this natural process, promoting detoxification, reducing fluid retention, and boosting your overall well-being.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Auckland

At Meridian Health in Auckland, we offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage as a dedicated therapeutic session to help your body function optimally, providing a path to natural swelling relief Auckland residents can benefit from.

Your Body's Cleansing Network: The Lymphatic System

The Importance of a Dedicated, Systematic Session

At Meridian Health, Lymphatic Drainage Massage is performed as a specific, routine therapy due to the time required and the systematic approach needed for effectiveness. A comprehensive whole-body LDM treatment typically requires at least 45-55 minutes to be performed correctly.

The Importance of Sequence & Proximal Influence

  • Treating only a selected or isolated distal area (e.g., a swollen ankle) is generally ineffective with LDM. This is because the lymphatic system drains towards central points near the heart. Stagnation in these "proximal" drainage areas will prevent fluid from the "distal" areas from draining effectively.

Our Lymphatic Drainage Routine: A Step-by-Step Overview

  • The LDM routine is carefully sequenced to ensure optimal drainage:
    • Initial Clearing (Supine Position): We begin by stimulating reflex points on the chest (between the upper ribs) and in the clavicular fossa (above the clavicles). This helps to influence and open the major lymphatic ducts.
    • Head and Neck (Supine): Treatment then moves towards the cervical (neck) lymph nodes and includes gentle drainage techniques for the face.
    • Upper Limbs (Supine): We then address the arms, starting by clearing the axillary (armpit) nodes, then following the Yin channels of the arms down to the trochlear (elbow) nodes, and finally to the hands.
    • Chest Area (Supine): The chest area is then drained, particularly for women, with a focus on the inframammary fold, directing flow towards the axillary area.
    • Abdomen & Lower Ribcage (Supine): Attention is given to the lower ribcage and abdomen, with particular focus on techniques that support the large intestine and abdominal lymphatic structures.
    • Lower Limbs (Supine): We clear the inguinal (groin) nodes first, then follow the Yin channels of the legs downwards.
    • Transition to Prone Position: The patient then turns over.
    • Back & Posterior Ribcage (Prone): Treatment starts around the lateral ribcage, draining towards the axillary area.
    • Posterior Legs (Prone): Finally, we address the back of the legs, following the Kidney and Bladder channels, including the popliteal (behind the knee) nodes and the calf muscles. Common areas for lymphatic stagnation are systematically addressed.

Our Manual Lymphatic Technique: Gentle, Rhythmic, and Directed

  • The techniques throughout involve light, repetitive, and rhythmic strokes, carefully directed along lymphatic pathways, towards the major lymph nodes.

Tailoring Your Lymphatic Drainage Experience

  • We understand that some individuals prefer a quiet, deeply relaxing session, while others appreciate learning more. During your LDM session, your practitioner will ask if you prefer a more meditative experience or a more informative one.

Observation and Communication During Your Treatment

  • Throughout the session, particular attention is paid to the lymph nodes, noting any tenderness or swelling. If any swollen nodes are detected, you will be immediately notified and advised to consult your doctor if necessary. Significant lymph stagnation in other tissues will also be noted.

Maximize Your LDM Benefits: Preparation & Aftercare

Your Comfort and Privacy

The therapist will need skin contact with sensitive areas, such as the abdomen, under-breasts, arm pits, and groin. You should prepare your clothing and grooming accordingly. You will be comfortably positioned and professionally draped throughout the session for your privacy.

Attire for Your LDM Session

As with any oil massage, you will be asked to remove your clothes and lay down under a sheet. Its best to remove your bra and any elastic bands that could obstruct the flow of lymph or the movement of the practitioner's hands during the process. LDM requires skin contact and uses a fair amount of oil. It is best to wear small, loose-fitting underwear to your appointment, or you may be asked if you are comfortable removing it. Tight elastic can constrict lymphatic pathways, and should be avoided around these sessions.

Post-Treatment Clothing Advice

To facilitate the best outcome, we recommend avoiding tight straps or restrictive clothing for 3 to 5 days before and after your treatment if possible. Loose, comfortable clothing allows your lymphatic system to continue functioning optimally. We recommend cotton/linen clothing with draw-strings - not elastic bands.

Holistic Support & Education Post-Session

Following (or during) your LDM session, your practitioner can provide information on causes of lymphatic congestion, dietary and exercise advice, and instruction in a specific breathing technique crucial for enhancing abdominal lymphatic drainage. This comprehensive support aids our approach to Detox Massage in Auckland.

Your Lymphatic Massage Journey: What to Expect

During Your LDM Session

  • LDM involves very light, gentle, rhythmic, and repetitive strokes. The session can be quiet and relaxing, or informative. You may be taught a breathing technique to enhance the treatment.

After Your LDM Session

  • You may feel very relaxed, possibly tired. Increased urination is common. Many report feeling "lighter" and less congested. Drink plenty of water.

Important Considerations & Contraindications for LDM

  • While gentle, LDM is not suitable for acute infections, active cancer (unless cleared by oncologist), blood clots (DVT), congestive heart failure, or acute kidney failure. Unexplained swelling requires medical diagnosis first. Your practitioner will discuss any contraindications.
